Laurel Kramer has always believed in the connection between mind and body for our wellness. She became a licensed psychologist (PhD) to help others learn how to harness this connection.

During her clinical practice at SSM Health for 28 years, many benefited from Reiki with coping and healing emotional and physical health. One of her specialties was helping those going through cancer treatment and recovery, and others living with chronic health conditions.

Laurel’s patients have greatly appreciated the addition of the healing modality of Reiki to cope with their health and emotional problems. After retiring from SSM Health in 2024, Laurel is now offering Reiki to people in their beautiful studio located at the Red Slipper Warrior Project office. Virtual appointments are available as well.

Lizabeth Fleenor, MA, Certified Reiki Master

Lizabeth Fleenor, MA, Certified Reiki Master

At an early age, Lizabeth Fleenor understood the intertwined healing relationship of the earth, spirit, mind, and body. Exploring nature, listening to one’s higher self, and practicing body/mind awareness, it was natural for her to pursue the rejuvenating practice of Reiki.

She believes the intention of Reiki restores our energy balance, opening a path to healing, which creates a deeper sense of peace, forgiveness, and self-love. A medical journalist, Liz has over 35 years’ experience as a writer and editor of a global scientific/clinical journal and teaches Pilates in Jefferson City.

The gift of Reiki inspired her to share this healing tradition with others and invites you for a private session at the Red Slipper Warrior Project office.

Hear From Their Clients

My first Reiki session with Laurel Kramer was two weeks after my second chemo treatment for breast cancer. The peacefulness and calm Reiki provided after that first session was notable and really allowed me to feel calmer with my next treatment.

I have since had several more Reiki sessions, and each one is different and more impactful than my first session. I have a few more chemo sessions to complete, and I am grateful the Reiki sessions continue helping me through my treatments amid the ups and downs and feeling there is little else I can do for myself fighting this cancer.

At times, I am able to help myself with some of the reiki techniques I have learned from Laurel, but I really appreciate being with her for a full reiki session.

As you go through your cancer treatments there are tools available to help make the treatment easier, at least for a bit. Reiki is one of those tools. I encourage you to try it. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

What is Reiki?

Reiki (ray-key) is the Japanese word meaning “universal life energy” or “vital force energy” that is a part of and connects all living things. It is a form of healing energy.  Reiki corrects energy flow and creates balance, stress reduction, and relaxation that promotes healing. Reiki not only enhances your physical well-being but also has a positive effect on your emotional and spiritual equilibrium. Reiki is gentle and non-invasive.

How does Reiki energy help support healing?

The Reiki healing technique was founded by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s. It has evolved through research and clinical experience to become a natural adjunct to western allopathic medicine and integrative healthcare practices. Reiki enhances and supports the treatments received by medical professionals. It is not a cure for serious medical conditions and does not diagnose. The trained Reiki practitioner helps focus the abundant flow of universal life energy to be transmitted to you through the Reiki practitioner’s hands with limited touch to you physically. It can help support healing the mind, body, and spirit, and boost physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual energy. You may feel more centered or clear and calm after a Reiki session.

Because Reiki is safe, non-invasive, and leaves you feeling calm and physically relaxed, you can live a better quality of life. If you are seeking a way to live a fuller life with less stress, an occasional Reiki treatment may help with that. If you are in some kind of medical treatment for a serious disease, Reiki may help you cope more easily with the disease and side effects. If you have a chronic health condition or chronic pain, Reiki may help you live better with fewer and less intense episodes.

What are the benefits of Reiki?
  • Provides relief from stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Promotes a state of relaxation and peace
  • Reduces or alleviates pain
  • Supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself
  • Accelerates physical healing of injuries
  • Balances the energy system
  • Brings deep and restful sleep
  • Promotes emotional healing and mental well-being
  • Assists the body in cleansing toxins
  • Supports allopathic and holistic treatment
  • Reduces side-effects from medications, chemotherapy, anesthesia
Is Reiki a religion or belief system?

Reiki is a healing tradition that is open to any belief system of the person receiving it. It is not a religion or belief system by itself.  You do not need to believe in Reiki for it to work for you.  While having an open mind and a positive intention can enhance the experience, Reiki is still beneficial even if you are skeptical or unsure about it. The energy flows regardless of personal, religious, or spiritual belief.

Is Reiki real?

Yes. There are numerous positive healing outcomes in those who have added Reiki to their healing journey. Benefits reported are better sleep, reduced anxiety and depression, reduced physical pain, increased daily energy, lowered blood pressure, and improved blood circulation. If you suffer from chronic health problems or are experiencing the effects of chemotherapy from cancer treatments, Reiki may improve your quality of life through the balancing of your energy.

What do I need to do during my Reiki treatment?

The only thing you need to do is be receptive and open to Reiki energy.  You will be asked to bring your higher self/spirit present and also your own beliefs that connect you to your higher self/spirit. Reiki always works for your highest and greatest good.

What is a Reiki session like?

A typical Reiki session lasts about 45 to 60 minutes. As a client, your Reiki practitioner will ask you to sit in a chair or lay on your back on a therapy table in a private room and relax. In most cases she will ask about any particular issues you would like to address. You are fully clothed, shoes are off, and a light covering is offered. You begin by closing your eyes and taking a few deep breaths to get comfortable.  There is calming background music playing throughout the session.  The goal of the session is relaxation, to aid in healing, so there likely won’t be much talking.  Your comfort is the most important thing.

The Reiki practitioner is trained to be open to receive the current of universal life energy so it can flow through her hands to you. She is a conduit for this healing energy and does not give or take energy from you. Throughout the session the Reiki practitioner uses a series of hand positions to scan your body above you physically with the intention to help unblock and move your energy so your mind and body can begin healing. The hand positions include areas around the head and shoulders, torso, arms, legs, and feet. Minimal touch may be the back of your head and your feet, but she will always ask permission. There is no manipulation of the skin, bone, or tissue. You may notice areas of your body relaxing; you may see different colors in your mind’s eye or have dream-like visions; you may go into a deep meditative state; you may feel sensations of energy moving throughout your body; you may even fall asleep.

How will I feel after a Reiki treatment?

Because everyone is different, each and every Reiki experience is unique to the client’s personal internal experience. This is because your body is different each time you receive Reiki, and Reiki heals by balancing the areas that need restoring.  Reiki sensations can be very subtle and with continued treatments, you may notice energy shifts. Reiki works on all levels, so if there isn’t a physical sensation, the energy could be working on a deep emotional or spiritual level. Once finished, the Reiki practitioner will provide feedback or insights based on the session and answer any questions.

What does a Reiki session cost?

Reiki practitioners are trained professionals and the fee is discussed prior to the treatment. One of the traditional principles of Reiki is an exchange of energy between practitioner and client—Reiki for you and a fee in return. RPGH Reiki donates a portion of your fee is donated to RSWP.

Can I have a remote Reiki session or does it have to be in-person?

Remote sessions can be just as effective as in-person sessions.  Generally, the Reiki practitioner and you will agree on a time where you can be in a quiet place to relax, i.e. your bed, a couch, a comfy chair. She will chat with you over the phone or video chat to prepare. Just like during the in-person session, what happens during a remote session differs for everyone. Then she will follow up to see how the Reiki has settled in. A fee is also collected for remote Reiki sessions.
